Methodology of Skin Disease Treatment

Chinese Medicine has a 4,000 year history, ultimately developing a complete diagnosis and treatment system, as well as its own special medical theory. The principle behind it is not only to treat the symptoms but to identify the complete illness pattern or body syndrome. By identifying syndromes, practitioners address the complete body characteristics resulting in the immediate symptom which in today’s vernacular is essentially a holistic approach. Dr. Ou is not only looking at the symptoms but the entire health condition of each patient for her diagnosis.

Skin diseases generally signal other health problems acting like a mirror, and these other problems can be reflected in the skin like an advance warning. For example, acne patients often have digestive problems or are under severe stress. Many eczema patients have asthma, hay fever or also suffer stress problems. By analyzing each case as a whole, Dr. Ou can select the most appropriate method to treat each patient and best prescribe a unique formula for each individual.

Types of Treatment – For Immediate Attention or Long Term Care

For immediate attention, treatment will combine different methods to reduce the symptoms. Dr. Ou accepts most health insurance, but some patients might not have any health insurance. Aware of this, Dr. Ou always tries to use the best and most efficient methods to reduce costs for her patients without compromising the effectiveness of the overall treatment. Immediate attention treatment will focus on alleviating the apparent symptoms with a specific goal that leads to the quickest overall cure. For example, a sequence of procedures to treat serious acne might involve the following:

1) Treatment: Dr. Ou treats the patient with acupuncture and Chinese herbs.
     Goal: Limit infection and inflammation.

2) Acne Facial: As conditions improve, she gives the patient an acne facial treatment.
Goal: Clean out all blackheads and pimples.

3) Micro-dermabrasion: She gives the patient a careful micro-dermabrasion treatment.
Goal: Remove all the dead skin.

Afterwards, the patient’s skin will become smoother, look younger, and have a healthier improved complexion. Note that this is an example, and your procedure may vary. Of course, should you not like to use particular methods Dr. Ou suggests, she is open to your requests or suggestions and will evaluate your condition to choose with you the best treatment methods for your situation.

For long term care, treatment will respond to the patient’s current overall condition. Long term care treatments will focus on improving the overall condition and health of the patient seeking to reduce the causal effects of the symptoms rather than temporarily reducing only the symptoms. Depending on a patient’s condition at the initial visit, a particular method of treatment may be used. For the next session, depending on the results, different treatments may be incorporated to respond to these results. This progressive style treatment responds directly to the effects of previous treatments and will vary according to the degree of improvement.

For example, eczema with serious infection and itch may require certain Chinese herbal formula medicines to treat the internal causes of the symptoms, while acupuncture or other treatments will be required for addressing the external symptoms to reduce the infection and itch. On the next visit, Dr. Ou might change the formula for the herbs while still using acupuncture or combine it with other external treatments like cupping.

The flexibility in this type of treatment package emphasizes the Traditional Oriental Medicine philosophy of empirical feedback to arrive at a particular combination of treatments, which is important because each person has differing physiological responses to certain treatments. This treatment is most appropriate for chronic diseases that can be mollified over a period of time by adjusting treatments incrementally until the results are satisfactory and the condition healed.
